TiVo recently started shipping their fourth-generation DVRs, which they are calling the Premiere line.
If you have never used a TiVo, you will not believe how much different your TV experience is with it. A few key advantages:
- An easier to use, better looking interface, miles ahead of Comcast’s very dated (practically unusable) system
- Much more storage for recorded shows (150 hours in HD compared to 20 with Comcast)
- Simplified recording of the shows you want to watch: type in the name of your favorite show—using the new remote with a slide out keyboard in it—and tell it to record the next showing or all future episodes. The TiVo will find the channel for you; no more searching by date and time for the shows you like.
- Streaming movies from the Internet over wifi (Netflix, Amazon, & Blockbuster)
- A dual tuner built in, which means you can record one program at the same time you are watching something else, or record two programs at the same time. Everyone except for Comcast has this as a standard feature on their receivers.
On the financial side, before you dismiss the idea as an extravagance, consider this: if you are using a Comcast DVR and have HD service (who doesn’t?), they are charging you an extra $20 per month in fees. When you upgrade to the TiVo, your Comcast bill will go down by $20. Click the title of this post to go to a technical breakdown of the improvements made in the newest generation.
